    Two firefighters died from injuries sustained while fighting a June 2, 2011, fire in a multi-story, single-family dwelling in San Francisco. NIST used its Fire Dynamics Simulator and visualization software to investigate the circumstances and fire behavior that led to untenable conditions on the first floor, where the downed firefighters were found. After failure of windows in the basement, where the fire began, an adjoining stairway became a “chimney for hot gases” that poured onto the first floor. The train is a four-car conventional train and the tunnel represented within the simulation is a 120 m portion of the tunnel. The fire is intended to represent an accidental fire starting in luggage. Depicted in this animation is the 100C temperature iso-surface. The entire computational domain consists of 602,805 cells. The mesh is unstructured resulting in an accurate representation of the curved tunnel roof. It offers a highly useful analysis of the results, obtained from an exhaustive interpretation of the results calculated by the FDS motor, and all this, without the need of a highly qualified expert in the use of the FDS motor or fire evolution in buildings.

For simplicity it is assumed that the windows do not fail and the only form of hot venting from the cars is via any open doors. The main interior combustible materials are the luggage. Seats, carpets and wall materials are also combustible and have properties as specified in British standard BS 6853. A combustion and flame spread model are used in analysis and the predicted hazards are: temperatures, smoke concentrations, radiative flux, CO concentration, CO2 concentration and O2 concentration. The train geometry is that of a conventional train with carriages separated by doors. Other scenarios include a comparison with an Open Wide Gangway car configuration and a terrorist incident where an accelerant is used. The predicted fire output is then coupled to the railEXODUS evacuation simulation software to predict the impact of the fire on evacuation.
